In the early days there was Bubble Bobble – in 1987 it was published by Taito as an arcade game. Then in 1994 came Puzzle Bobble featuring many if not all of the themes and characters from the original game. Both games have Japanese animation which is characteristically cute and which has proved successful in any number of released games. Originally there were two different versions released. The first in ’94 and the second about 6 months later. The second was virtually identical except for being in stereo and having a few different sound effects. The second version could be configured to display the alternate title “Bust a Move”. The opening title sequence also included anti drug and anti littering messages. The game in whatever version you have is pretty simple to play. There is a prearranged setup of coloured bubbles in the playing area. The player controls the pointer at the bottom of the screen. As the bubbles drift down the screen, the player uses the pointer to direct other bubbles to attach themselves to the drifting bubbles. When three or more of the same colour are attached points are awarded and they are removed from the playing area. Bubbles that are fired from the pointer travel in straight lines although they can bounce off the sides. The fired bubbles stop when they come up against another bubble or reach the top of the playing area. The closer the top gets to the bottom, the faster the music plays and the intensity increases. If the top with its bubbles cross the line at the bottom of the playing area, the player dies and puzzle bobble is over. The object of the game of course is to clear all the bubbles from the puzzle bubble playing area without losing your life. If you completely clear the area of bubbles, a new round starts with bubbles arranged in a new pattern. |
